What Is IPL Therapy?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Unlike a laser, which emits one wavelength, IPL releases a broad spectrum of light that is filtered to target specific structures in the skin, principally the pigment in a sun spot and the haemoglobin in a broken capillary.
That target absorbs the light and converts it to heat, which breaks down excess pigment or collapses the wall of an unwanted vessel. Surrounding tissue absorbs far less energy and is left intact, which is what makes the treatment selective.
We also use CPL, or Calibrated Pulsed Light, which delivers a more tightly controlled output. Your practitioner will select between them and set the parameters after a patch test, since the correct settings depend heavily on your skin tone.

Who Is This Treatment Suitable For?
IPL is not suitable for every skin tone. A patch test is mandatory and your practitioner will decline treatment where the risk is too high.

Consultation and Patch Test
Your practitioner assesses your skin tone and concern, reviews your medication and carries out a patch test at least 24 hours before treating.

Setting the Parameters
Filter, energy and pulse duration are set for your skin tone and the structure being targeted, since pigment and vessels need different settings.

The Treatment
Cool gel is applied and the handpiece moved across the area. Each pulse feels like a warm elastic band flick, and protective eyewear is worn throughout.

Darkening and Clearance
Treated pigment darkens over a few days before lifting away. Vessels fade over two to four weeks, and most concerns need three to six sessions.
Safety, Side Effects and Aftercare
Clinical Safety
IPL carries a genuine burn risk when settings do not match the skin, which is why our practitioners patch test every client and record the parameters used. We will not treat recently tanned skin regardless of how the appointment was booked.
