What Is IPL Therapy?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Unlike a laser, which emits one wavelength, IPL releases a broad spectrum of light that is filtered to target specific structures in the skin, principally the pigment in a sun spot and the haemoglobin in a broken capillary.

That target absorbs the light and converts it to heat, which breaks down excess pigment or collapses the wall of an unwanted vessel. Surrounding tissue absorbs far less energy and is left intact, which is what makes the treatment selective.

We also use CPL, or Calibrated Pulsed Light, which delivers a more tightly controlled output. Your practitioner will select between them and set the parameters after a patch test, since the correct settings depend heavily on your skin tone.

Benefits of IPL Therapy

Targets the colour in your skin that should not be there, without disturbing the surface.

Fades sun damage and pigmentation

Breaks down the clusters of excess pigment that show as age spots and uneven patches across the face and chest.

Clears visible thread veins

Collapses small broken capillaries around the nose and cheeks that no cream will address.

Calms persistent redness

Reduces the diffuse flushing associated with rosacea, improving overall evenness of tone.

Improves tone across a course

Repeated sessions build a cumulative improvement in clarity that a single treatment cannot deliver.

Areas We Can Treat

Thread vein work is priced by area while pigmentation and rejuvenation are priced per session. Your practitioner will confirm which applies.

Nose

The most common site for broken capillaries, and the smallest and least expensive area to treat.

Cheeks

Treats thread veins and the persistent flushing that often accompanies them.

Full Face

Comprehensive treatment of pigmentation, vessels and overall tone across the whole face.

Face and Neck

Extends treatment below the jaw, where sun damage is often worse than on the face.

Decolletage

Addresses the mottled pigmentation and vessels that accumulate on the chest.

Hands

Reduces the age spots on the back of the hands that give away sun exposure.

Who Is This Treatment Suitable For?

IPL is not suitable for every skin tone. A patch test is mandatory and your practitioner will decline treatment where the risk is too high.

Generally Suitable For

Lighter skin tones with sun damage or pigmentation

Visible thread veins on the face

Rosacea-related redness and flushing

Those able to stay out of the sun during a course

Not Suitable For

Deeper skin tones, where the burn risk is higher

Recent sun exposure, sunbeds or fake tan

Photosensitising medication or supplements

Pregnancy or breastfeeding

“I can already see results on my neck and my face, although I havent finish my treatment yet, even my husband commented that he also can see difference in me. I love all the ladies there, they’re so friendly and make you feel at home. I’m looking forward to more sessions, I’ll be sad when the treatment is over but no doubt I’ll be back for more ❤️.”

What to Expect

1

Consultation and Patch Test

Your practitioner assesses your skin tone and concern, reviews your medication and carries out a patch test at least 24 hours before treating.

2

Setting the Parameters

Filter, energy and pulse duration are set for your skin tone and the structure being targeted, since pigment and vessels need different settings.

3

The Treatment

Cool gel is applied and the handpiece moved across the area. Each pulse feels like a warm elastic band flick, and protective eyewear is worn throughout.

4

Darkening and Clearance

Treated pigment darkens over a few days before lifting away. Vessels fade over two to four weeks, and most concerns need three to six sessions.

Safety, Side Effects and Aftercare

Clinical Safety

IPL carries a genuine burn risk when settings do not match the skin, which is why our practitioners patch test every client and record the parameters used. We will not treat recently tanned skin regardless of how the appointment was booked.

Potential Side Effects

Expected effects reflect the energy delivered and settle within a few days:

Redness and mild swelling for 24 to 48 hours

Temporary darkening of treated pigment

A gritty, coffee-ground appearance as spots lift

Essential Aftercare

Apply SPF 50 daily and keep the area out of the sun

Do not scratch or exfoliate darkened pigment away

Skip hot showers, saunas and the gym for 48 hours

Avoid sunbeds and fake tan for the whole course
